Expectations
- Pastor Paul Owens
The way of life that God has already prepared for us
Especially in his beginnings with people, Jesus
typically said 3 things, two statements and one
question:
- “Your
sins are forgiven”
- "Follow me”
- “What
are you looking for?” …followed by the invitation, “Come
and see.”
- Jesus
also healed people of their diseases and demons.
“What are you looking for?”
If you are looking for a tame, convenient god who will
tolerate you and expect little of you, you won’t meet
such a God in Jesus Christ nor among St. Paul Lutheran
Church. But if you are looking for the God who loves
and forgives sinners and calls them to be an expression
of his compassion in our community and beyond… then come
and see who you meet among the people of St. Paul.
Jesus
Christ speaks about members
and membership in his Church, but the term he
likes even better is
discipleship. A healthy disciple strives in
the 5 expectations/ways of life Christ has for his
Church:
- Weekly worship
- Regular Christian education
- Daily Bible reading & prayer
- Serving
- Giving (a tithe, 10%, is the biblical
standard).
Of
course, these five functions don’t earn us salvation…
only Jesus can do that. It is accurate though, to
understand these 5 as
“the way of life that God has already prepared for us.”
In the New Testament, Paul puts it this way:
8For by grace you have
been saved through faith, and this is not your own
doing; it is the gift of God—9not the result of works,
so that no one may boast. 10For we are what he has made
us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God
prepared beforehand to be our way of life.
(Ephesians 2.8-10)
Here
are some biblical foundations for the
way
of life that God has already prepared for his disciples
at St. Paul Lutheran Church:
Weekly Worship
Genesis 12:1-7 - The first
thing Abram does when he arrives in the land to which God
has sent him is build an altar to the Lord in order to
worship him. Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go from your
country and your kindred and your father's house to the land
that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and
I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will
be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one
who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of
the earth shall be blessed." So Abram went, as the LORD had
told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five
years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took his wife
Sarai and his brother's son Lot, and all the possessions
that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had
acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of
Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, Abram
passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak
of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then
the LORD appeared to Abram, and said, "To your offspring I
will give this land." So he built there an altar to the
LORD, who had appeared to him.
The Third Commandment
Exodus 20:8 - Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it
holy.
What does this mean for us?
We are to fear and love God so that we do not neglect his
Word and the preaching of it, but regard it as holy and
gladly hear and learn it. (Luther's explanation from small
Catechism)
Exodus 31: 12-17 - The
LORD said to Moses: You yourself are to speak to the
Israelites: "You shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign
between me and you throughout your generations, given in
order that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you. You
shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you; everyone
who profanes it shall be put to death; whoever does any work
on it shall be cut off from among the people. Six days shall
work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn
rest, holy to the LORD; whoever does any work on the Sabbath
day shall be put to death. Therefore the Israelites shall
keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their
generations, as a perpetual covenant. It is a sign forever
between me and the people of Israel that in six days the
LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he
rested, and was refreshed."
1 Chronicles 16:29 -
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an
offering, and come before him. Worship the LORD in holy
splendor;
Psalm 26:6-8 - I wash
my hands in innocence, and go around your altar, O LORD,
singing aloud a song of thanksgiving, and telling all your
wondrous deeds. O LORD, I love the house in which you dwell,
and the place where your glory abides.
Psalm 122:1-5 - I was
glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the
LORD!" Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem--built as a city that is bound firmly together. To
it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, as was decreed
for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. For
there the thrones for judgment were set up, the thrones of
the house of David.
Psalm 134 - Come,
bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by
night in the house of the LORD! Lift up your hands to the
holy place, and bless the LORD. May the LORD, maker of
heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.
Psalm 150:1- Praise
the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his
mighty firmament! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise
him according to his surpassing greatness! Praise him with
trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him
with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud
clashing cymbals! Let everything that breathes praise the
LORD! Praise the LORD!
Matthew 11:28-30 -
"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy
burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you,
and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and
my burden is light."
Luke 10:16 - "Whoever
listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you
rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent
me."
Luke 11:28 - But he
said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and
obey it!"
Acts 2:42 - They
devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Hebrews 10:25 - not
neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but
encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day
approaching.
Revelation 7:-17-
After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no
one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and
peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before
the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands.
They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs
to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!"
And all the angels stood around the throne and around the
elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their
faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen!
Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and
power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then
one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these,
robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to
him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me,
"These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they
have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of
the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God,
and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one
who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will
hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike
them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of
the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to
springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every
tear from their eyes."
Regular Christian Education
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 -
Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your
heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when
you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and
when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as
an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts
of your house and on your gates.
Psalm 119:9-16 - How
can young people keep their way pure? By guarding it
according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; do
not let me stray from your commandments. I treasure your
word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you. Blessed
are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes. With my lips I
declare all the ordinances of your mouth. I delight in the
way of your decrees as much as in all riches. I will
meditate on your precepts, and fix my eyes on your ways. I
will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
Psalm 25:4-5 - Make
me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me
in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my
salvation; for you I wait all day long.

fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the
knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him.
Ephesians 6:4 - And,
fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring
them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Galatians 1:6-7 - I am
astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who
called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a
different gospel-- not that there is another gospel, but
there are some who are confusing you and want to pervert the
gospel of Christ.
Daily Bible Reading and Prayer

they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will
hear.
Matthew 7:7-8 - "Ask,

and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks
receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone
who knocks, the door will be opened.
Matthew 5:44 - But I
say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you,

if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my

is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything
according to his will, he hears us.
Serving God by Serving Others
Genesis 12:2 - I will
make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make
your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
Issiah 1:16-17 - Wash
yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your
doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do
good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan,
plead for the widow.
Matthew 14:14 - When
he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion
for them and cured their sick.
Matthew 25:31-46 -
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels
with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All
the nations will be gathered before him, and he will
separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the
sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right
hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to
those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my
Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me
food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I
was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave
me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in
prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer
him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you
food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when
was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked
and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick
or in prison and visited you?' And the king will answer
them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the
least of these who are members of my family, you did it to
me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that
are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared
for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave
me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you
did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not
visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it
that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or
sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' Then he
will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do
it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.'
And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the
righteous into eternal life."
Luke 6:27-31 - "But I
say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those
who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who
abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the
other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not
withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from
you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for
them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Galatians 5:13-15 -
For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only
do not use your freedom as an opportunity for
self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one
another. For the whole law is summed up in a single
commandment, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." If,
however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you
are not consumed by one another.
Ephesians 5:1-5 -
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and
live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us,
a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But fornication
and impurity of any kind, or greed, must not even be
mentioned among you, as is proper among saints. Entirely out
of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk; but instead,
let there be thanksgiving. Be sure of this, that no
fornicator or impure person, or one who is greedy (that is,
an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ
and of God.
Giving
- a tithe (10%)
Malachi 3:8-10 - Will
anyone rob God? Yet you are robbing me! But you say, "How
are we robbing you?" In your tithes and offerings! You are
cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me--the whole
nation of you! Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so
that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the
test, says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the
windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an
overflowing blessing.
1 Corinthians 16:1-2 -
Now concerning the collection for the saints: you should
follow the directions I gave to the churches of Galatia. On
the first day of every week, each of you is to put aside and
save whatever extra you earn, so that collections need not
be taken when I come.
1 Chronicles 29:3-9 -
Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the
holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver,
and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it
to the house of my God: three thousand talents of gold, of
the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined
silver, for overlaying the walls of the house, and for all
the work to be done by artisans, gold for the things of gold
and silver for the things of silver. Who then will offer
willingly, consecrating themselves today to the LORD?" Then
the leaders of ancestral houses made their freewill
offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the
commanders of the thousands and of the hundreds, and the
officers over the king's work. They gave for the service of
the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand
darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen
thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents
of iron. Whoever had precious stones gave them to the
treasury of the house of the LORD, into the care of Jehiel
the Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced because these had
given willingly, for with single mind they had offered
freely to the LORD; King David also rejoiced greatly.
2 Corinthians 9:6-15 -
The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap
bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your
mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a
cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every
blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of
everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. As
it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever." He who supplies seed to
the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your
seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your
righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for your
great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God
through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only
supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with
many thanksgivings to God. Through the testing of this
ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession
of the gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your
sharing with them and with all others, while they long for
you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God
that he has given you. Thanks be to God for his
indescribable gift!
Luke 21:2-4 - He also
saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said,
"Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all
of them; for all of them have contributed out of their
abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had
to live on."
2 Corinthians 8:1-5 -
We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace
of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia;
for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy
and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of
generosity on their part. For, as I can testify, they
voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond
their means, begging us earnestly for the privilege of
sharing in this ministry to the saints-- and this, not
merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the
Lord and, by the will of God, to us.
